About the vacancy

Our client is one of the biggest online retailers worldwide. Over the years we’ve helped the client develop web-portals, mobile apps, delivery control systems, staff management tools, data storage, and much more. The systems we’ve built together are in operation 24/7, contributing to the client’s success.

The technology department has begun an initiative to strengthen its data management practices. Governance of data on the Google Cloud Platform is a key topic within this initiative. This role exists to enable continuous improvement of GCP governance practices with a strong bias towards automation.

The scope of this role is wide. In general, we want to improve our professionalism with regards to the management of our resources help on the GCP, with a strong focus on data governance (but with scope to include other good practices where it makes sense to do so). In practice, given the scale of services/resources in use on the GCP, and the volume of data/activity on our data platform, this role will involve a continual split of time between discovery and making sense of our estate, while also working on making practical improvements.

  • Documenting clearly and often, to minimize the dependence on tribal knowledge
  • Working closely with project and departmental team members to ensure a shared understanding of progress, options, and blockers
  • Anticipating & managing technical risks (avoiding dead ends, selecting tools/approaches based on sound reasoning, and so on)
  • Coping with evolving requirements and ongoing discovery
  • Estimating effort
  • Seeking opportunities to automate rather than build up ‘toil’ and technical debt
  • As needed, communicating effectively with stakeholders

Must have

  • Knowledge of distributed systems, popular public cloud services, and big data
  • Hands-on experience working with Google BigQuery
  • Experience with Google Cloud Storage and GCP IAM
  • Expertise in SQL and Python

  • Previous experience working in an Agile team
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving skills
  • Previous experience working in partially/fully remote teams
  • Working proficiency and communication skills in verbal and written English

Would be a plus

  • Experience in administering resources with Terraform
  • Experience with Jira, Slack, G Suite
  • Experience in a project with Data Governance
